The principal objective of this research was to design a
contextual study aimed at discovering the sociodemographic
and cultural profile, as well as the school trajectories,
of the students registered in the youth education project
(Projeto de Educação Juvenil - PEJ) of the Municipal
Secretariat of Education, Rio de Janeiro. The research
constitutes a pilot study, that is, a small scale version
of a complete study, whose objective was to test aspects of
the research design, such as the questionnaire and the
sample of students registered in the PEJ in 2003, the
processes of data collection, preparation of the data base
and the variation of responses, comprehending the inherent
stages of a survey. The dissertation details these stages
and their products, based on the quantitative data
collected, presenting preliminary considerations on the
sociodemographic, socio-economic and cultural dimensions,
as well as the school trajectories, of the students
registered in the project.
