Resumo:
In a child´s universe, access to the Internet has developed tremendously, facilitated by the increasing presence of computers in schools, homes and play areas. Moreover, sites for children are widely promoted by the television media. In this context, the Internet represents a potentially large influence on children´s learning, which brings up the importance of providing ways for children to feel comfortable carrying out activities using this media. However, there is a gap between the extent of advertising and the true understanding of sites for children. This situation gets worse when we consider that a growing number of children lack the ability to use information technology. In order for children to have good comprehension of the information by way of the graphical interfaces of a site, the design of the interfaces must be adequate to the necessities and habits of the child, containing familiar graphic elements which are coherent with the subject of the site. Through a questionnaire on the meanings of images selected from the site of Sítio do PicaPau Amarelo, qualitative information was raised. This research identified nuances in the repertoires of two groups of 30 students from two kinds of schools: a private and a public one. The conclusion of the research reinforces the importance of semiotic principles and assumptions for the study of the understanding and meaning of design products. The current study presents to the designer theoretical approaches in order to determine the graphic and conceptual requirements in the elaboration of the signs that compose a children´s interface. With the use of these requirements, a public with specific characteristics, as that of children, will be better served.
