Resumo: | |||||||||||||
This study sought to capture the experiences of hawkers in urban passenger trains that circulate on the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region (RJMR), Brazil. This is a deepening of the study that culminated in the master s dissertation entitled A life of wandering: work, precarization and the hawkers of the trains of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. Currently, all the hawkers working on the RMRJ trains work in a clandestine way, since their work is not permitted SuperVia, the company who manages the RMRJ railroad, the traveling work in that space. For the elaboration of the present study, the empirical field was entered, in a more systematic way, starting in march of 2018, until the second semester of the same year. The field work consisted of participant observations of the dynamics of the subjects that work in the railroad and in interviews with hawkers on the five main lines of the urban trains of the RMRJ (Deodoro, Santa Cruz, Japeri, Belford Roxo and Saracuruna). Sixteen semi-structured interviews were realized, carried out on the platforms of the railway and also in the composition of the train, with hawkers who worked selling a wide sort of products. Complementary, a variety of sources were used, such as official documents, newspapers and magazines, social medias, pictures and testimonials from hawkers working in other urban spaces. Secondary data from research institutes and bibliographic research were also accessed, as and carried out theoretical-bibliographical review. In this process of research and academic-scientific construction, the work category was deepened, as were the concepts of class and experience. In the discussion and development of the thesis, the process of structural precarization of the current work in the capitalist system and the work experiences of the hawkers in the trains of the RMRJ were also articulated. It emphasized, therefore, the overexploitation of the work to which they are submitted. Another axis of the realized investigation is that of the urban question, both theoretically discussing this category as historically presenting the Rio de Janeiro s and the railroad s space. In this direction, theoretical-empirical discussions on urban space, the right to the city and the appropriation of the city by hawkers as their work locus were developed and articulated. In the perspective of articulating work and social reproduction, elements that surround the reproduction of this fraction of the work force, as well as their families, are presented. Additionally, experiences concerning the work of the hawkers in the railroad space of the RMRJ were presented, identifying its conflicts and contradictions, as well as the possible forms of resistance of these workers. This resistance is expressed as related to survival strategies, identifying the work peculiarities, conditions and way of lives of these workers. The reading key adopted, which comprehends the experience of hawkers as a survival strategy, marked by precarious working and living conditions, allows us to affirm it as a unique form of resistance of these workers on the RMRJ railroad.
