Chronic renal failure is the definitive entry into the world of disease and puts the individual before his inherent condition of finitude. The work with this group of patients is permeated by loss and questions about death, suffering and fear. Dealing with the possibility of death and loss stirs very personal feelings in subjects, who suddenlyfeel empty and helpless. Their needfor refuge, safety and protection against those threatsis primarily directed towardsthe health professionals responsible for their kidney treatment. The patients characteristics, their new post-diagnosis psychic constructions, the difficulties of professionals who deal with chronic kidney disease and their interaction are discussed based on a literature review and the author s experience in a clinic that treats this group of patients. The objective of this study was to highlight the importance of the doctor-patient relationship insofar as it promotes refuge, communication, autonomy and respect towardsthe different speeches, which results in treatment quality assurance, better coping and a new life perspective before death.
