We discuss the notion of the parents conjugal environment as part of the facilitating environment of the child s maturation process, considering that parental conjugality affects the subject s psychic integration process. In order to do this, we address the environment concept in Winnicottian literature, highlighting the adaptability and human quality components. We stress that conflicts experienced within conjugality mark the potential conjugal space, which reveals individual psychic flaws of both partners. We review the paradox concept in psychoanalysis, addressing its maturational and defensive dimensions, in the couple and in parenthood. We conclude that a conjugality that is grounded in a paradoxical and precarious experience will affect parenthood, thereby establishing an environment in which the child will activate defensive processes marked by the experience of a false self.
