This thesis Emancipation for whom? A Gramscian analysis on gender studies and Social Work aims to analyze gender studies in the training of social workers, considering that the curriculum of the Social Service course and the context of professional discussion reveal much evidence and clues about the grasp of the genre as well as the place that, at present, it occupies in the training. In an attempt to show the relevance of this issue, we analyze not only the curriculum but also evidences on the existence of a growing dialogue in the Social Work, with the hypothesis that this process has been driven by the increasing of family and feminine aspects of neoliberal public policies. The observation of low acuity of researches and social theories to interpret gender dynamics in social reality led us to analyze the field of training, and, of course, about the difficulties encountered in locating the dialogue with social work on the subject, always referred to a subordinate status of knowledge production in a professional scope. This research aims, therefore, analyze the evidence of gender studies in Social Work based on indiciary paradigm, Carlo Ginzburg (1990), and the shift of paradigms that this debate requires, with Gramsci s political theory as reference. Thereby we seek to contribute to the understanding of gender category as a result of the struggle for human and policy emancipation, from a conception of the world organic and unitary. The research for this thesis was theoretical and empirical nature, being developed with schools/Social Work departments of four Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the state of Rio de Janeiro: Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The research is guided by the dialectical critical method, which meant an improvement in the professional debate, in a perspective that articulates the subjects in the history, whereas gender relations remind us of the domestic sphere but, also, point us to an inseparability with the public sphere. In this sense, the Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) was chosen for a closer dialogue in the thesis. The choice of this Marxist thinker was because he is a great critic of pernicious separation between action and intellect. In this sense be constituent of contemporary professional debate the perspective of building a social utopia, we recognize in the gender studies, mainly from the relationship between universality and particularity, as well as the revolutionary vision of Gramscian studies, fundamental elements for human emancipation for all.
