The turbulent fluid flow was modelled by the Boussinesq analogy to evalute the
Reynolds stress, and the turbulent viscosity was calculated by the k-e turbulence model.
A computer program to soolve the tridimensional cartesian elliptic equations was developed
using the control volume method approach. The velocity-pressure couppling was
treated using the SIMPLEC algorithm. The algebric conservation equations were solved
in a segregated way, using the TDMA line-by-line algorithm and a block correction was
employed to acelerate convergence.
The fluid flow was solved for a tundish without flow control and different configura
tions with a weir and dam were also studied. The tome of residence inside the tundish
was calculated and a cleanliness factor was adopted to quality diferent: configurations.
The results were compared with solutions avaiable in the literature, showing an excelent
comparison. It was shown that the use of a weir and a dam as flow control can be very
atractive, as the time of residence inside the tundish is bigger, raising the probality
of non-metalic inclusions separation.
