Resumo:
This work is concerned with numerical modeling of the unilateral contact problem involving low stiffness structures and a rigid surface under conditions of hydrodynamic lubrication. Reynolds fluid film lubrication theory is employed. The Finite Element Method is applied in the discretization of both the structure and the hydrodynamic pressure field. A numerical procedure to solve the proposed problem, based on the feasible projection search direction approach, is presented. The main motivation for the work reported in this dissertation is to develop a numerical tool to model the resistance forces acting against the motion of cleaning and inspecting pigs in pipelines.
