The main objective of this disseration is to analyse the effects of the minimum wage on the Brazilian labour market. In order to do that, we explore the regional convergence of the Brazilian minimum wage that occured during the first half of the 80’s. Our methodology is based on the so called differences-in-differences approach and the data we use were obtained from the monthly household survey Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego (PME) for the six main Brazilian metropolitan regions. In addition, we develop a theorical model that tries to explain the influence of the Brazilian minimum wage on the wage of informal workers.
