Resumo:
Once recognised that asbestos can cause harm during its extraction and its handling during the fabrication process - which turns it into asbestos-cement - the use of this material has been restricted in some countries and in others prohibited by law, as in the case of the United States of America ,Canada, Mexico and the European Community. Unfortunately asbesto-cement is one of the most commonly used constructional material in Brazil. With the objective to substitute this material with any other of low cost and abundantly available, local material composites of mortar with vegetable fibres are being investigated. In this work the fracture behaviour of composites of cement mortar matrix, reinforced with short sisal fibres randomly distributed, is studied. Four points bending specimens have been used with a "U" type notch of different curvature radii at the root, submitted to pure bending moment. To establish the properties of the developed composite, tests were carried out on: pure cement mortar matrix, composites of mortar with 3% of volume of sisal fibres with 25 mm length and composites with 45 mm fibre length. In a previous work, the stress field at the root of the notches was studied using electrical strain gauges, which did not give good results because it is not possible to find a strain gauge which could be compatible both with the grain size of the composite and the size of the stress concentration zone. Therefore the method of photoelasticity, was chosen in this work to establish the stress field at the root of the notch in order to determine KI and kt . The methods of transmission and reflection photoelasticity applied to polycarbonate material sheet, produced satisfactory results. However, when the reflection method was used with a thin sheet of polycarbonate material together applied to the surface of the test specimens, the fringe order was not well defined. This made it difficult to establish the magnitude of the stresses. Therefore it was not possible to estimate the values KI and kt with satisfactory accuracy. It is recommended that other methods such as shadow Moire to be used for the purpose.
