Resumo:
In the first page of his Essays, Montaigne turned directly to his readers to declare his purpose of representing himself in his most simple and ordinary way. The purpose of the autoportrait leads him to admonish: je me suis proposée aucune fin que domestique et privée. Je n ay nulle consideration de ton service ny de ma gloire. His private style represents a newness in that time, forming a contrast with the general practice of humanist authors of exhibits their erudiction, serving the public instruction and make himself imortals, occupying the position of wisdon models. Our intent here is investigate that newness character of Montaignes gloria theme. That critic marks his distance of the humanists ideals and of the modes which regulates the traditional patterns of relationship between author and reader in the Renaissance, founded in the author desire of instruct and glorify himself and in the disposition of the reader to learn and eulogize the author. To accomplishe our purpose, we anlyze here the course of Montaignes reflection in De la gloire, where his negative perspective of the ambitions takes the most expressive form, and De la praesumption, which follows De la gloire, with a autoportrait for theme, against the ambition of aggrandize himself.
