Resumo:
The present work analyzes silence as an important component of the discourse, in communicative situations of Brazilian Portuguese, as well as the way that Brazilians in general deal with silence as a response in dialogical interactions. In Brazilian culture, classified as multi-active (Lewis, 2006), that is, extremely verbose and collectivist, people tend to avoid being silent, as this could be embarrassing, for the speaker and for the other. In contrast, for some other cultures, such as Asian, quietness is more comfortable, and even socially valued, as a sign of respect and politeness. Given this fact, therefore, in an intercultural interaction, it is possible to occur cultural shocks and misunderstandings: while one remains silent thinking he is being polite, the other can understand this attitude as impolite and disinterested. Therefore, it is intended, with the research, to offer subsidies for teachers of Portuguese as a Second Language for Foreigners (PL2E) regarding silence in interactions, in order to minimize misunderstandings when language learners come into contact with native speakers . The study is based on Interculturalism and Pragmatics, with intercultural studies by Lewis (2006), Tannen s (1985) categories of silence value and Goffman s (1967) concept of face. For this purpose, dialogues from The second mother (2015) and Just like our parents (2017) – both brazilian movies – were used as corpus. From the data, the situations were classified in which silence could have a positive, negative or ambiguous value.
