Resumo: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The present thesis aims to verify what kind of translator, from English into
Portuguese, Fernando Pessoa was. In order to achieve this goal, I read Arnaldo
Saraiva’s book Fernando Pessoa: poeta-tradutor de poetas (1999), and analyzed the
meter, rhyme scheme, rhythm and meaning, as well as the diverse stylistic devices in
Percy Bysshe Shelley’s To a skylark, Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Catarina to
Camoens, Frank Marzials’s The last metamorphosis of Mephistopheles, and in
Fernando Pessoa’s translations of these poems. The methodology adopted can be found
in Britto (2002, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2006c, 2008a, 2008b), and its goal is to identify
the characteristics of the original poem which are poetically significant; to assign a
priority to each characteristic, depending on its higher or lower contribution to the total
aesthetic effect of the poem; and to verify whether the translator was able to re-create
the characteristics considered the most significant among the ones which can effectively
be re-created – in other words, to verify whether the translator was able to find
correspondences for them. For these analyses, I used the terminologies in Abrams et al.
(1974), Fraser (1977), Hollander (1989) and Fussell (1979) for the originals; and in
Chociay (1974), Mattoso (2010) and Proença (1955) for the translations. Issues that
pervade the discussions of poetic translation, such as fidelity, were also taken into
account.
