[pt] Em meados do século XIX, o México enfrentava um duplo desafio: além das violentas disputas internas sobre a conformação do Estado nacional, havia a constante ameaça de intervenções estrangeiras, especialmente dos Estados Unidos. Nesse contexto, a visão de um “mundo civilizado” dividido em grandes grupos raciais começou a ser empregada para diferenciar duas Américas que se viam cada vez mais distantes: uma dominada pela raça latina e outra pela raça anglo-saxã. Inicialmente presentes predominantemente em textos europeus, esses conceitos passam a ser mobilizados também pelos próprios americanos como forma de auxiliar em seus objetivos políticos. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar os usos e apropriações do conceito de raça latina entre os anos de 1852 e 1867, por intelectuais associados a três importantes periódicos mexicanos: El Siglo Diez y Nueve, El Universal e La Sociedad. Esse período é marcado pelo fim da guerra com os Estados Unidos, pela Guerra de Reforma, pelo início da intervenção francesa e pelo estabelecimento do Segundo Império mexicano. Busca-se interpretar como o conceito foi apropriado por intelectuais mexicanos, sua relação com o imperialismo francês e com o conceito de América Latina, o sentido de raça contido no conceito e as razões que explicam sua adoção – ainda que transitória – como elemento aglutinador por intelectuais ibero-americanos. O conceito foi mobilizado não só em um contexto de esforços para forjar uma identidade regional, mas também para fazer frente a discursos que inferiorizavam a região e apregoavam a sua suposta incapacidade para trilhar os caminhos do progresso por seus próprios meios.

[en] In the mid-19th century, Mexico faced a dual challenge: in addition to violent internal disputes over the formation of the national state, there was the constant threat of foreign intervention, particularly from the United States. In this context, the vision of a civilized world divided into large racial groups began to be employed to differentiate two Americas that were becoming increasingly distinct: one dominated by the Latin race and the other by the Anglo-Saxon race. Initially present predominantly in European texts, these concepts were also adopted by Ibero-Americans as a means of supporting their political objectives. This dissertation aims to analyze the uses and appropriations of the concept of the Latin race between 1852 and 1867 by intellectuals associated with three significant Mexican periodicals: El Siglo Diez y Nueve, El Universal, and La Sociedad. This period was marked by the end of the war with the United States, the Reform War, the beginning of the French intervention, and the establishment of the Second Mexican Empire. The objective is to investigate how the concept was appropriated by Mexican intellectuals, its relationship with French imperialism and with the concept of Latin America, the meaning of race contained within the concept, and the reasons that explain its adoption—albeit transitory—as an agglutinating element by Ibero-American intellectuals. The concept was mobilized not only in the context of efforts to forge a regional identity but also to confront discourses that sought to undermine the region by proclaiming its supposed inability to progress by its own means.
