[pt] Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão teológico-pastoral sobre o papel da Igreja no contexto dos cuidados paliativos. Partindo da ressignificação do sofrimento humano, conforme apresentada em O Humano Sofrer e na Salvifici Doloris, em diálogo com os valores fundamentais da liberdade e da vida defendidos por Joseph Ratzinger, busca-se compreender o acompanhamento pastoral junto às pessoas em cuidados paliativos e a seus familiares. Em um cenário contemporâneo marcado pelos avanços científicos e tecnológicos, que se confrontam com as questões da finitude da vida, do sofrimento e da morte — experiências inquietantes para o ser humano —, a fé cristã e a ressignificação do sofrimento apresentam-se como caminhos para uma vivência esperançosa dessas realidades. Evidencia-se que os cuidados paliativos exigem, além da dimensão da fé, posturas éticas, humanizadas e integrais. Estas encontram fundamento na antropologia cristã de Joseph Ratzinger e nos referenciais bíblicos da presença de Deus diante do sofrimento humano, configurando-se como caminho para a salvaguarda da dignidade inviolável da pessoa humana em todas as etapas de sua existência. No diálogo entre a pastoral e a bioética, e a partir do aprofundamento nos direitos fundamentais, compreendem se as responsabilidades pessoais e eclesiais orientadas à defesa integral da vida humana. Por fim, à luz da Teologia Pastoral, destaca-se a importância de uma práxis eclesial sensível, humana e fiel, capaz de acompanhar e aconselhar com esperança os enfermos em cuidados paliativos, seus familiares e os profissionais de saúde diante dos desafios éticos, espirituais e pastorais que emergem nesse contexto.

[en] This dissertation offers a theological-pastoral reflection on the role of the Church within the context of palliative care. Grounded in the re-signification of human suffering as articulated in On Human Suffering and in Salvifici Doloris, and in dialogue with the fundamental values of freedom and life upheld by Joseph Ratzinger, the study seeks to examine pastoral accompaniment of patients receiving palliative care and their families. Within a contemporary context marked by scientific and technological advancements that increasingly confront questions concerning the finitude of life, suffering, and death—experiences that profoundly challenge the human condition—Christian faith and the re-signification of suffering are presented as pathways toward a hopeful engagement with these realities. The study demonstrates that palliative care requires not only the dimension of faith but also ethical, humanized, and integral approaches. These are grounded in Joseph Ratzinger s Christian anthropology and in biblical foundations affirming God s presence amid human suffering, thereby constituting a framework for safeguarding the inviolable dignity of the human person at every stage of existence. Through dialogue between pastoral theology and bioethics, and by means of a deeper examination of fundamental rights, the research elucidates personal and ecclesial responsibilities oriented toward the comprehensive defense of human life. Finally, in light of Pastoral Theology, the dissertation underscores the importance of a sensitive, humane, and faithful ecclesial praxis capable of accompanying and offering hope-filled counsel to patients in palliative care, their families, and healthcare professionals in the face of the ethical, spiritual, and pastoral challenges inherent to this context.
