[pt] Este trabalho analisa como a Coreia do Sul constrói e mobiliza sua memória nacional para produzir uma narrativa de identidade. A partir de uma revisão crítica sobre memória, identidade e alteridade, o estudo demonstra como processos históricos – como a colonização japonesa, a Guerra da Coreia, a divisão da península e as transformações econômicas do pós-guerra – moldaram discursos oficiais e sociais sobre quem é o nós coreano e quem constitui o outro. O trabalho argumenta que a modernidade sul-coreana depende de uma articulação contínua entre esquecimento estratégico, seletividade memorial e produção simbólica, permitindo ao Estado e às instituições culturais promoverem uma identidade nacional coesa, ainda que construída sobre tensões não resolvidas. Ao examinar políticas de memória, narrativas estatais e disputas contemporâneas sobre pertencimento, o trabalho revela como a identidade coreana se sustenta em uma dinâmica permanente de afirmação e diferenciação, iluminando as relações entre passado, nação e projetos de futuro.

[en] This thesis examines how South Korea constructs and mobilizes national memory to produce a narrative of identity. Through a critical analysis of memory, identity, and otherness, the study shows how historical processes - including Japanese colonization, the Korean War, the peninsula s division, and post-war economic transformation - shaped official and societal discourses about who constitutes the Korean self and the other. The research argues that South Korean modernity relies on the interplay of strategic forgetting, selective remembrance, and symbolic production, enabling both the state and cultural institutions to promote a unified national identity built upon unresolved tensions. By analyzing memory policies, state narratives, and contemporary disputes over belonging, the thesis demonstrates how Korean identity is sustained through ongoing dynamics of affirmation and differentiation, shedding light on the connections between the past, the nation, and future-oriented projects.
