[pt] Neste artigo, sugerimos uma reflexão sobre a ascensão da extrema direita nas democracias latino-americanas, particularmente ao analisar o Brasil e a Argentina. Argumentamos que as disputas pela memória pública em relação à época das ditaduras militares criou consequências profundas para as culturas políticas e populares dos respectivos países. Segundo uma perspectiva interdisciplinar, afirmamos que o avanço recente da extrema direita não pode ser explicado isoladamente pela crise econômica, pela instabilidade política ou pela intervenção internacional. Apontamos que as disputas e a manipulação da memória pública nos países tornam evidente uma das estratégias principais da extrema direita. Ao mesmo tempo, as políticas de verdade e de memória pública aprofundam as barreiras ao sucesso da extrema direita, especificamente quando ela acumula poder político considerável. Para tanto, analisamos estatísticas dos governos, pesquisas de opinião pública e literatura existente. Além disso, desenvolvemos uma comparação entre os longas-metragens Ainda estou aqui (2024) e Argentina, 1985 (2022), que retratam testemunhos pessoais nos regimes autoritários no Brasil e na Argentina, respectivamente. Dessa forma, o artigo contribui para a literatura de dois modos principais. Primeiro, ao abordar a importância das políticas de memória pública como barreiras ao sucesso eleitoral de governos da extrema direita. Segundo, ao estabelecer o impacto dos dois filmes na criação e manutenção de memórias públicas.

[en] In this article, we develop a reflection on the rise of the far right in Latin American democracies, specifically by analyzing Brazil and Argentina. We argue that the disputes over public memory in relation to the era of military dictatorships have had profound consequences for the political and popular cultures of the respective countries. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we explain that the recent rise of the far right cannot be explained in isolation by the economic crisis, political instability or international intervention. We argue that the disputes and manipulation of public memory in the countries make one of the main strategies of the far right evident. At the same time, public memory and truth policies create barriers to the success of the far right, even when it accumulates considerable political power. To do so, we analyze government statistics, public opinion polls and existing literature. In addition, we compare the films Ainda estou aqui (2024) and Argentina, 1985 (2022), which portray personal testimonies in authoritarian regimes in Brazil and Argentina respectively. In this way, the article contributes to the literature in two main ways. First, by addressing the importance of public memory policies as barriers to electoral success and far-right governments. Second, by establishing the impact of the two films on the creation and maintenance of public memories.
