[pt] A legitimidade das causas em níveis superiores é ameaçada pela generalização do argumento da exclusão causal e pelo princípio do fecho causal do mundo físico. Essa ameaça indica que, ao menos à primeira vista, parece haver uma precedência das causas físicas no nível base em relação às demais causas no mundo. Neste artigo procuro estabelecer critérios adequados para a separação de níveis e exploro três versões revisadas do fecho causal, avaliando como cada uma responde a três questões centrais. Concluo que nenhuma das três variedades elimina causas em níveis superiores, que efeitos nesses níveis parecem depender, em alguns casos, de causas do mesmo nível e que a influência de causas em níveis superiores sobre efeitos em níveis inferiores não pode ser descartada.

[en] The legitimacy of causes at higher levels is challenged by the generalization of the causal exclusion argument and the principle of the causal closure of the physical world. This challenge suggests that, at least at first glance, there appears to be a precedence of physical causes at the base level over other causes in the world. In this article, I seek to establish appropriate criteria for the distinction between levels and explore three revised versions of causal closure, assessing how each responds to three central questions. I conclude that none of these three versions eliminates causes at higher levels, that effects at these levels seem to depend, in some cases, on causes at the same level, and that the influence of causes at higher levels on effects at lower levels cannot be ruled out.
