[pt] Esta tese propõe um estudo a partir do pensamento de Max Bense (1910–1990) — filósofo alemão que, em Brasilianische Intelligenz: Eine cartesianische Reflexion (Inteligência brasileira – uma reflexão cartesiana), publicado em 1965, delineou uma interpretação singular sobre como racionalidade e improvisação se reinventam no contexto brasileiro. As múltiplas relações estabelecidas nos campos literário, estético, político e sociocultural do Brasil nos anos 1960 continuam, ainda hoje, a levantar questões cruciais no âmbito da interdisciplinaridade proposta por Bense. Mais do que uma investigação histórica, esta pesquisa volta-se para os desdobramentos contemporâneos do pensamento benseano no Brasil, examinando como sua proposta ressoa em práticas artísticas e reflexões críticas atuais. O eixo central da tese gira em torno da formulação do conceito de cartesianismo tropical, entendido como uma justaposição tensa e fértil entre os impulsos da razão cartesiana e as forças inventivas dos trópicos. Nesse sentido, o cartesianismo tropical não apenas problematiza os modos de mapeamento da inteligência brasileira, como também oferece uma elaboração teórica mais densa e aberta da imagem do Brasil desenhada por Bense. Trata-se de um operador conceitual que articula pensamento e estética, crítica e criação — oferecendo-se como ferramenta analítica e dispositivo de invenção, capaz de refletir os modos pelos quais obras contemporâneas — literárias, visuais, filosóficas — reinventam uma ideia de futuro no país.

[en] This thesis proposes a study grounded in the thought of Max Bense (1910–1990) — a German philosopher who, in Brasilianische Intelligenz: Eine cartesianische Reflexion (Brazilian Intelligence – A Cartesian Reflection), published in 1965, outlined a singular interpretation of how rationality and improvisation are reinvented within the Brazilian context. The multiple relationships established across Brazil s literary, aesthetic, political, and sociocultural fields during the 1960s continue to raise crucial questions today, especially in light of the interdisciplinarity envisioned by Bense. Rather than a strictly historical inquiry, this research turns toward the contemporary unfoldings of Bensean thought in Brazil, examining how his proposals resonate within current artistic practices and critical reflections. The core of the thesis revolves around the formulation of the concept of tropical Cartesianism, understood as a tense and fertile juxtaposition between the impulses of Cartesian reason and the inventive forces of the tropics. In this sense, tropical Cartesianism not only problematizes the ways in which Brazilian intelligence has been mapped but also offers a denser and more open theoretical elaboration of the image of Brazil outlined by Bense. It emerges as a conceptual operator that articulates thought and aesthetics, critique and creation — offering itself as both an analytical tool and a device of invention, capable of reflecting the ways in which contemporary works — literary, visual, philosophical — reinvent visions of the future within the country.
