[pt] Ao longo de sua trajetória acadêmica, Luiz Werneck Vianna consolidou uma vasta agenda de pesquisa, sem perder, contudo, a vocação pública que animou sua vida intelectual. Membro de uma geração marcada pela conjuntura crítica dos anos 1960, Werneck Vianna transitou entre a militância política e a atuação profissional no campo das Ciências Sociais, forjando uma biografia na qual a vida do intelectual, seu fazer profissional e a premência dos desafios postos pela conjuntura imediata estavam unidos de forma incontornável. Este artigo propõe, assim, uma releitura dos principais temas investigados por Werneck Vianna, associando suas urgências à conjuntura a partir da qual foram pensados. São indicadas três fases como caminhos possíveis para apreensão do seu fazer intelectual: um primeiro momento, compreendendo o período que se estende do final dos anos 1970 até o início dos anos 1990; uma segunda fase, que abarca os anos 1990 e a primeira década dos anos 2000; e uma terceira etapa, que abrange o período de recrudescimento da crise política do país, intensificado a partir das manifestações de junho de 2013. Ao seu modo, o intelectual público buscou interpretar o país, indicando novos e velhos atores, transformações, permanências, desafios e caminhos possíveis, mas, sobretudo, disputando o sentido do ator e dos fatos.

[en] Throughout his academic career, Luiz Werneck Vianna consolidated a vast research agenda, without losing, however, the public vocation that excited his intellectual life. Member of a generation marked by the critical situation of the 1960s, the expert moved between political activism and professional activity in the Social Sciences, constructing a biography in which the life of the intellectual, his professional work and the urgency of the challenges mobilized by the situation immediately were together in an unavoidable way. The paper proposes a reinterpretation of the main subjects investigated by Werneck Vianna, associating their urgency with the context from which they were conceived. Three phases are indicated as possible paths for understanding his intellectual work: a first moment, comprising the period that extends from the end of the 1970s to the beginning of the 1990s; a second phase, which addresses the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s; and a third stage, which covers the period of resurgence of the country s political crisis, intensified after the demonstrations of June 2013. In his own way, the public intellectual sought to interpret the country, indicating new and old actors, transformations, permanence, challenges and possible paths, but, above all, disputing the meaning of the actor and the facts.
