[pt] Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar e comparar duas traduções para o português do poema The Cry of a Lost Soul, do escritor americano John Greenleaf Whittier, a fim de discutir os processos tradutórios operados pelos dois tradutores, a saber: Pedro d Alcântara, último imperador do Brasil; e Pedro Luís Pereira de Souza, advogado, poeta e político brasileiro do segundo império. A tradução de Pedro d Alcântara é datada de 1864, mas ganhou sua versão editada somente em 1889; enquanto a tradução realizada por Pedro Luís, também produzida em 1864, apareceu nas páginas do Diário do Rio de Janeiro em agosto do mesmo ano. O aporte teórico deste estudo encontra-se respaldado pelos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução, e o método de análise descritiva segue os pressupostos de Lambert e Van Gorp (1985). As traduções analisadas nesta proposta são consideradas como obras originais, produzidas e inseridas no mesmo contexto histórico, linguístico, literário e cultural da segunda metade do século XIX.

[en] This article aims to analyze and compare two translations into Portuguese of the poem The Cry of a Lost Soul, by the American writer John Greenleaf Whittier, to discuss the methods of two translators, namely: Pedro d Alcântara, last emperor of Brazil, and Pedro Luís Pereira de Souza, Brazilian lawyer, poet, and politician of the second empire. Pedro d Alcântara s translation is dated 1864, however his work was edited only in 1889. The translation made by Pedro Luís was published in the Diário do Rio de Janeiro in August 1864. The theoretical contribution of this study is supported by the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS), and the method of descriptive analysis follows the assumptions of Lambert and Van Gorp (1985). Taking DTS as our theoretical framework, the translations analyzed are considered as original works. Both were produced and inserted in the same historical, linguistic, literary, and cultural context of the second half of the 19th century.
