[pt] A escassez de intérpretes de conferências negras, negros e negres no mercado brasileiro é um tema premente, ainda que invisibilizado no dia a dia do exercício do ofício, nos cursos de formação e também nos Estudos da Interpretação. Considerando as estruturas e agências que regem as relações econômicas e sociais na sociedade brasileira e que perpetuam o racismo estrutural e institucional, apresentamos neste artigo a história da (negação da) oportunidade de aquisição de línguas estrangeiras pela população negra brasileira e depoimentos de intérpretes negros com o objetivo de identificar quais impedimentos históricos ao acesso à plena escolarização refletem a estratificação racial da sociedade. Preconceitos de cunho racial durante a entrada no mercado de trabalho são, para além de reflexos do racismo estrutural e institucional, também gargalos para a democratização da profissão de intérprete entre cidadãos afro-brasileiros.

[en] The small number of black conference interpreters in the Brazilian market, a number turned invisible in the day-to-day practice of the profession, in training courses and also in Interpreting Studies, is a pressing issue. Considering the existence of structures and agencies that perpetuate institutional and structural racism governing economic and social relations in the Brazilian society, this article presents an account of the history of the (denied) opportunities in foreign language acquisition on the part of the black Brazilian population and an analysis of testimonials given by black interpreters. Both lead us to the conclusion that historical barriers to the access to full schooling reflect the racial stratification of society. Also, racial prejudice during entry into the job market is not only a reflection of institutional and structural racism, but also a bottleneck for the democratization of the interpreting profession among Afro-Brazilian citizens.
