[pt] O objetivo precípuo deste artigo é fazer uma breve incursão na história da teologia moral católica, destacando os principais aspectos dos períodos onde ocorreram mudanças significativas, seja na compreensão da mesma, seja no método de análise. Procuramos acentuar o fato de que a teologia moral católica surgiu oficialmente, como ciência, no Concílio de Trento. Anteriormente, incluindo o período da Patrística e da Escolástica podemos afirmar que houve autores que dissertaram sobre aspectos éticos ou morais do cristianismo, mas isso não significava tratar-se de uma ciência teológica específica. Esperamos a partir desta síntese, trazer um entendimento mais claro e preciso do momento de renovação da teologia moral católica pelo qual passamos atualmente. Apresenta-se, também, uma fundamentação histórica da teologia moral, do horizonte tridentino ao contexto pós-Vaticano II, procurando demonstrar que ela sempre esteve a reboque dos acontecimentos, e não diante deles, acenando por qual caminho o cristão pode e deve enveredar-se.

[en] The main objective of this article is to make a brief incursion into the history of Catholic moral theology, highlighting the main aspects of the periods where significant changes occurred, either in the understanding of the same, or in the method of analysis. We try to emphasize the fact that Catholic moral theology officially appeared as a science in the Council of Trent. Previously, including the period of Patristics and Scholastics, we can say that there were authors who talked about ethical or moral aspects of Christianity, but that did not mean that it was a specific theological science. We hope from this synthesis to bring a clearer and more precise understanding of the moment of renewal of Catholic moral theology that we are currently experiencing. It then engages on a historical view of the foundation of moral theology, from the Tridentine horizon to the post- Vatican II context, demonstrating that moral theology has always been in the wake of the events, and not before them, indicating the direction Christians can and should take.
