[pt] Este trabalho analisa casos de ações repressivas abusivas perpetradas por policiais em favelas e habitações coletivas do Rio de Janeiro da Primeira República. Trata-se de mostrar como práticas excessivas de poder e de violências físicas protagonizadas por agentes da força policial foram abordadas por jornalistas, literatos e compositores populares como uma realidade cotidiana daquele período histórico. Nas primeiras décadas republicanas, a imposição de uma ordem social capitalista informava as estratégias de controle social da polícia - que atingiam os espaços de moradia de trabalhadores, onde eram desenvolvidas importantes experiências para a formação da classe.

[en] This article analyses several instances in which the Rio de Janeiro police force deployed abusive and repressive actions against favelas and collective tenements during the First Republic. I aim to demonstrate how journalists, writers, and popular songwriters of that period engaged with the excessive demonstrations of power and physical violence practiced by law enforcement as a daily reality. During the first decades of the republican era, the imposition of a capitalist social order informed the strategies of social control deployed by the police. These strategies went after the spaces where the working class lived, precisely where important experiences with regards to class formation took place.
