[pt] Este artigo tem como objetivo contribuir para o debate sobre a educação-matemática, apresentando os diferentes olhares teóricos em que historicamente se tem pautado o ensino da matemática. Situamos os aspectos socioeconômico, político e educacional, dominantes em determinado momento histórico, que compuseram o contexto para perceber as origens e diferenças de três períodos desse ensino, a saber: 1º período - Matemática Tradicional - aproximadamente até a década de 50; 2º período - Matemática Moderna - década de 60 e 70; 3º período - Matemática atual da década de 80 aos dias de hoje. Nossa compreensão é de que esta retrospectiva servirá como referencial para o entendimento da direção que o ensino da matemática foi tomando no contexto mais geral no qual está inserido.

[en] This paper aims to contribute to the debate on mathematics education. It presents the different theoretical insights on which historically the teaching of mathematics has been based. We place in context the socio-economic, political and educational aspects in order to perceive the origins and differences of three periods of this teaching, namely: 1st period - Traditional Mathematics - approximately until the end of the 1950s; 2nd period - Modern Mathematics - the 1960s and 1970s; 3rd period - today s Mathematics from the 1980s until today. Our understanding is that this retrospective look will serve as a reference to understand the direction which the teaching of mathematics has been taking in the more general context of the current background.
