[pt] A ideia de que o mundo estava sustentado sobre os fundamentos da religião, da moral e de Deus foi amplamente refutada pela modernidade, o que lançou o ser humano numa busca desenfreada pelo progresso. Na tentativa de retirar esses fundamentos, encontrou dificuldades em achar em que pautar suas ações e decisões, pois tudo o que tinha construído sustentava-se sobre o que acabara de destruir. Essa percepção de que tinha minado seus próprios fundamentos o deixou angustiado e com medo. A razão, de aliada, passou a ser inimiga. Já não mais agindo sob os antigos parâmetros, mas enveredando-se cada vez mais por caminhos onde tudo era válido e permitido. Dessa forma o que começou a se observar foram episódios que fugiam ao controle humano, como no caso de guerras e outras barbáries, o que levava o sujeito a questionar até onde iria chegar a partir de sua liberdade.

[en] The idea that the world was supported by the foundations of religion, morals and God was largely refuted by modernity, which launched the human being in an unbridled search for progress. In an attempt to remove these fundamentals, he found it difficult to fi nd what to base his actions and decisions on, because everything he had built was based on what he had just destroyed. This realization that he had undermined his own foundations left him anguished and afraid. Reason, as an ally, became an enemy. No longer acting under the old parameters, but taking more and more paths where everything was valid and allowed. Thus, what began to be observed were episodes that were beyond human control, as in the case of wars and other barbarities, which led the subject to question how far he would go from his freedom.
