[pt] A partir de argumentos em defesa da existência de relações raciais harmônicas foram fundamentados os discursos sobre a identidade nacional em Cuba e no Brasil desde a primeira metade do século XX. Contudo, ao longo do tempo, emergiram muitas vozes denunciando que as desigualdades sociais existentes eram consequências diretas das hierarquias raciais, e que essas sociedades estariam muito distantes do alcance da igualdade nesse âmbito. Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a construção dos discursos sobre a democracia racial na sociedade cubana e brasileira entre 1933 e 1978, relacionados especialmente com a figura das mulheres negras, por meio de produções literárias. Assim, para debater as representações de gênero, raça, sexualidade e mestiçagem presentes nas narrativas sobre democracia racial serão utilizadas duas obras: Écue-Yamba-Ó (1933), do escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier; e Gabriela, cravo e canela (1958), do brasileiro Jorge Amado.

[en] Based on arguments in defense of the existence of harmonic racial relations, discourses on national identity have underpinned Cuban and Brazilian societies since the first half of the 20th century. However, over time, many voices have emerged denouncing existing social inequalities and insisting that they are direct consequences of racial hierarchies. As such, the societies are far away from an idea of equality in this regard. This communication aims to discuss the construction of social imaginaries around the racial democracy in Cuban and Brazilian society between 1933 and 1978, especially with regard to the figure of black women, through literary productions. Thus, to discuss the representations of gender, race and sexuality present in the discourses on racial democracy, two works will be used: Écue-Yamba-Ó (1933) by the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier and Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958) by the Brazilian writer Jorge Amado.
