[pt] A tese João do Rio e seus cinematographos: o hibridismo da crônica na narrativa da belle époque carioca volta-se para o estudo das possibilidades da crônica tendo como objeto de análise a coluna Cinematographo, publicada semanalmente de 11 de agosto de 1907 a 19 de dezembro de 1910 na Gazeta de Notícias, e o livro homônimo (1909), produções de Paulo Barreto (João do Rio). A partir da realização de um diagnóstico dos textos veiculados no periódico, investiga-se o hibridismo do referido gênero. Além de atribuir sentido a uma época de intensas transformações e ressignificar a cidade que se deseja moderna, a crônica do autor assume o caráter de registro histórico, de crítica cultural e política e, por fim, se deixa contaminar pelo cinema e se apresenta como crônica cinematográfica. Nesse sentido, a coluna e o livro de mesmo nome evidenciam distinções. Embora, à primeira vista, pareçam semelhantes, na Gazeta marca presença a crônica-reportagem enquanto o livro se revela uma cinematografia de letras. Soma-se a isso a constatação da obra não ser simplesmente a reunião de textos publicados na coluna, como revela esta pesquisa. Além de analisar as possibilidades da crônica e suas representações da então capital federal, examinase a organização do volume Cinematographo e suas relações com as crônicas publicadas no jornal à luz das teorias da materialidade.

[en] The thesis João do Rio and his cinematographs: the hybridism of the chronicle in the narrative of Rio de Janeiro s belle époque draws on the study of the possibilities of the chronicle, focusing its analysis on the Cinematographo column, weekly published from August 11th, 1907 through December 19th, 1910 in Gazeta de Notícias, and on the homonymous book (1909), by Paulo Barreto (João do Rio). A diagnosis of the texts issued in the periodical serves as a starting point for the investigation of the hybridism of the aforementioned genre. Not only does the author s chronicle attribute meaning to a period of intense transformations and resignify the city which is expected to be modern, the author s genre also takes on the feature of a historical record, cultural and political review, and, eventually, allows itself to be contaminated by the cinema and introduces the cinematographic chronicle. Thus, the column and the homonymous book highlight distinctions. Although both texts look similar at first glance, the occurrence of the chronicle-report genre is observed in Gazeta whereas the book reveals a cinematography of words. Moreover, this cinematography makes it evident that the book does not stand as a compilation of the texts published in the column, as this research unveils. Besides analyzing the possibilities of the chronicle and its representations in the former federal capital, this thesis examines the organization of the volume Cinematographo and its correlations with the chronicles published in the periodical, in light of the theory of Materiality.
