Resumo
[en] J. K. Rowling s writing is very successful among children and adult readers.
The purpose of this monograph is to make a documental analysis (BOWEL, 2009)
of 17 excerpts from the first two chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher s
Stone (ROWLING, 1997, pp. 7-27) and 10 excerpts from The Cuckoo s Calling
(GALBRAITH, 2013, pp. 13-23) to understand, from a Systemic Functional
Linguistics perspective (HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2004), the author s
linguistic choices to build the heroes – Harry Potter and Cormoran Strike. The focus
of the analysis is on the transitivity system, in other words the clause as
representation of the protagonists experience. The elements that will be analyzed
are the processes, circumstances and attributes related to the heroes as participants.
The analysis of processes indicated that the author uses a mix of all process types
to construe her protagonists and not only relational clauses followed by attributes
(HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2004, p. 174). Regarding circumstances, in
addition to using them to add more information to the clauses, like location, manner,
cause, etc., Rowling also uses them as clues to what is going to happen and to add
more movement and energy to the scenes.
