[pt] O Papa João XXIII surpreendeu o mundo ao anunciar sua intenção em convocar um novo Concílio. No ano de 1962 seu intento ganhava vida e o Concílio tinha seu início. Por iniciativa ecumênica do Papa João XXIII foi criada a Secretaria para Unidade dos Cristãos liderada pelo Cardeal Augustin Bea, esta secretaria formou um grupo de teólogos não-católicos que auxiliariam nos trabalhos do Concílio. Foram chamados de Observadores do Vaticano II. Neste grupo havia teólogos das igrejas orientais, metodistas, luteranos, reformados, calvinistas, quakers, dentre outros. Dentre os não-católicos, destaque para o trabalho do luterano Oscar Cullmann que inclusive foi homenageado pelo Papa Paulo VI por seus serviços prestados e Karl Barth, convidado por João XXIII mas que infelizmente não pôde participar por problemas de saúde, porém, em 1966 Barth visitou o Vaticano e pôde se encontrar com Hans Küng, Joseph Ratzinger e com o próprio Paulo VI. Foi muito relevante o trabalho ecumênico do Concílio, especialmente através da Secretaria para a Unidade dos Cristãos e a importante contribuição dada pelos Observadores não-católicos, todo esse esforço representou avanços para o diálogo entre as diferentes igrejas e suas relações posteriormente.

[en] Pope John XXIII surprised the world by announcing his intention to convene a new council. In 1962 his intent came alive and the council had its beginning. By ecumenical initiative of Pope John XXIII was created the Secretariat for Christian Unity Cardinal Augustin Bea led by this department formed a group of non-Catholic theologians who would assist in the work of the Council. They were called to the Vatican observers. In this group there were theologians of the Eastern Churches, Methodist, Lutheran, Reformed, Calvinist, Quaker, among others. Among non-Catholics, especially the work of the Lutheran Oscar Cullmann who also was honored by Pope Paul VI for his services and Karl Barth, invited by John XXIII but unfortunately was unable to attend due to health problems, however, in 1966 Barth He visited the Vatican and could meet Hans Küng, Ratzinger and the Paul VI himself. It was very important ecumenical work of the Council, especially through the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity and the important contribution made by non-Catholic observers, all this effort represented advances for dialogue between different churches and their relationship later.
