Resumo
[en] There has been an increasing interest in genre studies and the notions of genres used in English Language Teaching materials, especially since the 1980s. The course books for teaching English in Brazil, especially the ones used by public schools, bring attention to the topic. According to the PCNs (Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais), the students should be exposed to as many genres as possible in order to master communication in life situations. This paper discusses how the cartoon and comic strip genres are presented and developed in three course books approved by MEC (Ministério da Educação) regarding two different PNLD (Programa Nacional do Livro Didático) programs, as well as why they were considered appropriate PNLD material.
