Resumo
[en] In media texts, we find rhetorical devices that relate to journalistic styles commonly termed as reporter voice and writer voice (Iedema et. al., 1994). In writer voice texts, the subjectivity of the authorial voice is overtly revealed by language, while in reporter voice texts the author s value judgments are backgrounded or appear less prominent, and the more explicit material is usually attributed to external sources brought in the text. These particular rhetorical mechanisms employed by reporter voice texts act to impart a sense of neutrality and objectivity to its news material. This study aims at deconstructing this sense of objectivity and neutrality conveyed by such style of media texts, as a means to reveal authorial positioning and to thus uncover the ideologies and power relations that are enacted in the selected corpus of news texts reporting on the U.S. students performance on the 2012 PISA survey. To achieve that, this study relies on the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to media texts, and on the Appraisal system, which provides the tools for the linguistic analysis of the selected news reports. This study intends to shed some light on the ideological power behind reporter voice texts that constitute a major part of journalistic discourse.
