[en] This is a critical incident which describes a situation that took place in a Portuguese for foreigners’ classroom. The learners were in Brazil, more specifically in the city of Rio de Janeiro and, consequently, were learning Portuguese as a second language in an immersion environment. Positive stereotypes and very frequently negative stereotypes about Brazil are part of these students’ baggage. This critical incident refers to my first experience in having to deal with one of these negative stereotypes: Brazil being understood as the country of corruption and disorder. The experience itself and the following reflections about it, described here in this paper, were extremely enriching and meaningful for both my professional and personal life.
