[pt] Este trabalho busca refletir sobre o conceito de democracia construído no idioma político de alguns jornais no período do governo de João Goulart e suas relações com o entendimento da crise vivenciada por seus atores. No pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial a democracia representativa emerge como um valor “Ocidental” em oposição ao comunismo Oriental e soviético. No Brasil, o embate entre, de um lado, uma democracia representativa comprometida com a contenção da participação política para além dos limites eleitorais e, de outro, reivindicações por uma ampliação da participação democrática e modificações nas estruturas sociais, políticas e econômicas será vinculado a esta oposição. O processo de democratização e a entrada de um contingente expressivo de eleitores marcam profundamente o debate político. A democracia representativa é significada como única alternativa política viável em oposição à agitação e corrupção comunista, identificadas à ampliação da participação política. À medida que estas reivindicações se avolumavam e o espectro político-partidário se diversificava, este idioma político atuava na moralização da política e na construção de uma cultura política autoritária, apartidária, despolitizada e anticomunista. A análise também procura refletir sobre a estrutura argumentativa deste contexto lingüístico, marcada pelo dualismo entre moral e política, e suas relações com o desfecho da experiência democrática brasileira.

[en] This work aims to study the concept of democracy built in the political idiom of newspapers in the period of João Goulart`s government and its relations with the crisis experienced by its historical agents. In the post- World War Two moment, representative democracy emerges in certain social circles as an occidental value in opposition to the soviet and oriental communism. In the Brazilian newspapers, this opposition will be linked with a political collision between, on one hand, a representative democracy restrained to the electoral boundaries and, on the other hand, demands for a more participative democracy and on social, political and economic structural reforms. The democratization process and the notable increase of the number of several electors perform a significant change on the political debate. In this sense, the representative democracy is signified as the only reasonable political option in contrast to the communist riots and his corruption, which have their meanings attached to the intensification of the Brazilian society`s political participation. This idiom will be sustained by the cause of the so called political moralization as it builds an authoritarian, non-partisanship, un-politicized and anticommunist political culture. The present analysis also has the purpose of investigating the linguistic context in which the dualism between politics and moral relates itself to the outcome of the Brazilian democratic experience.
