[pt] O objetivo desta dissertação - A tradução das escrituras budistas na
China: a primeira onda - é investigar a tradução da filosofia budista, a qual
constituiu a primeira grande abertura da China para uma cultura estrangeira. Essa
abertura teve início no século II, através das primeiras traduções das escrituras
budistas do sânscrito para o chinês, e durou até o século XI. Considerada pelos
estudiosos como a primeira grande onda de traduções no país, ela foi um capítulo
fundamental na sua construção cultural; até hoje, muito da vida e da cultura
chinesas - literatura, filosofia, escultura, música, para citar apenas algumas áreas
- ainda são permeadas pelo Budismo. O presente estudo se debruça mais
especificamente sobre essa primeira onda, mas, ao contextualizá-la, apresenta as
demais ondas tradutórias, por meio de um breve relato da história da China antes e
depois da chegada do Budismo. Além de ter acontecido de uma forma
extremamente singular e por isso tão enriquecedora para os nossos estudos, essa
onda tradutória foi, e ainda é, um campo muito fértil para discussões teóricas
sobre a tradução.
Resumo
[en] This dissertation - The translation of Buddhist scriptures in China: the
first wave - investigates the translation of Buddhist philosophy, which was the
first great opening of China to a foreign culture. This opening started in the
second century with the first translations of the Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit
into Chinese and lasted until the eleventh century. Considered by the scholars the
first great wave of translations in the country, it was a fundamental chapter in the
construction of its culture; to this day, a great deal of Chinese life and culture -
literature, philosophy, sculpture, music, to mention only a few areas - is
permeated by Buddhism. This present study focuses more specifically on this first
wave, but, by contextualizing it, presents the other translational waves through a
brief description of Chinese history, before and after the arrival of Buddhism.
Besides the extreme singularity in the way it happened, which makes it so
enriching to our discipline, this translational wave was and still is a very fertile
field for theoretical discussions of translation.
