The theme of this dissertation is Anísio Teixeira s concepts about the role of the art in teaching. In assuming the post as the Public Instruction Director in the Federal District in 1931, Anísio Teixeira promoted a wide-ranging reform,with big changes, including the creation of the Secondary Technical Schools. These schools were created to eliminate the dualism existed until then in the educational system, enlarging not only the access to secondary education, but also the content of general culture in this segment. The motivation to the studying of the teaching of art arises because of the permanent necessity of reaffirming and recognizing the importance of this area of knowledge. In order to identify and analyse the proposals of the teaching of the art in those schools, a new documental and historical research was developed, by means of finding and analysing documents and data in private collections and journals, besides bibliographic research. From the identification of programs, interlocutions and influences which determine the way the subject is developed in the period and the segment studied, there was a wide temporal cut to better understand his thought and action. Some moments of the formation of the educator in the late 1920 s,as well as some aspects of his performance in the Education and Health Secretary of Bahia (from 1947 to 1951),which confirmed his relationship with the art and the culture, emphasized by the proposal from the Carneiro Ribeiro Educational Center.In this Center, Anísio promoted integral education in which those two elements were fundamental components of the educational project. After the proposed analysis, it was possible to assume that, all over his life, Anísio Teixeira sought for the improvement of the teaching of the art, just as to implement this subject to the curriculum of secondary education, because he believed that the art was indissociable from all the educational process.
