One of the major focuses of studies addressing the world s energy area is the multiphase flow, which is related to oil recovery in the industry. However, despite the huge number of studies on the subject, there is still a range of doubts about this process. An example of this is the research for the formation of foams, or emulsions, in reservoirs that can cause operational inconveniences, thus requiring technological innovations to reduce this kind of problem. This work aimed to analyze one of the mechanisms that may explain the
formation of foams, or emulsions, in a porous media during a biphasic flow. Depending on the conditions, when a non-wetting fluid flows through a pore throat analogously to a fluid taht wets the wall of that media, there is an accumulation of the wetting fluid causing instabilities and consequently,
discontinuities at the interface therebetween, breaking the bubble / droplet . In the literature this mechanism is called snap-off The experiments of this work consisted in mapping the conditions of this
mechanism to pure and complex interfaces, whose interaction between the substances that work at the interface is more amphiguric than the simple ones. For this study, a microfluidic device was fabricated wich provided an adequate visualization of the behavior of the interface. Mixtures with polymer and surfactant were compared in order to obtain a capillary number map for the breaks and the non-wet phase thickness profile for these different interfaces. In order to perform these experiments, it was necessary to
characterize the fluids received in the laboratory, analyzing the influence of their parameters (such as interfacial tension) on the success of the snap-off and the difference in the break-up time for simple and complex interfaces.
