Resumo:
Diversification, one of the foundations of the Modern Portfolio Theory and based on the asset correlation, has become an important tool in models for asset allocation and in risk management. Recent studies, however, indicate a reduction in the efficiency of diversification in times of higher volatility since, as the correlation between stocks increases, there are severe discrepancies in the models that take into account the stability of the correlation matrix. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between variations in the correlation matrix of stocks and the volatility of the market, applying the methodology introduced by Jacquier and Marcus (2000) to the Brazilian and Latin American stock markets. Although each market presented different results, it was verified that the model, indexed by a factor, can explain that many of the variations in the correlation matrix are a result of the volatility of the respective.
