Resumo:
The post-industrial context, marked by the advent of a growing technological availability, has favored the emergence of new design practices. However, the body of knowledge of the field is shifted in relation to these recent changes. The objective of this work is the production of knowledge that helps the understanding of emerging experimentation practices in post-industrial design, especially in the scenario of self-production, through the identification and characterization of elements of experimentation, determinants on the design practices. It is proposed that a design approach based on experimentation would be appropriate for post-industrial breakthrough practices. Reflections from the literature review, especially the theoretical streams of reflective practice of Schon and product and service development management, have enabled the delimitation of a preliminary framework for experimentation in design. From a review on the subject strategic design, which reaches recent advances and theories of strategy unexplored by the design field, it is proposed an approach to post-industrial strategic design based on resource configuration for experimentation, produced over time and practices, and therefore within experimentation, so that design strategies are suitable even to unstructured processes. An effort to map the technological availability that marks the contemporary post-industrial context and the scenario of self-production reveals three axes for technological experimentation in design: digital manufacturing, physical interfaces for embedded systems, parametric and generative systems. A multiple cases study was conducted with eight creative groups. Theoretical-conceptual propositions are elaborated alongside the triangulation of empirical evidences (primary and secondary). From the confrontation between these propositions and the literature review a theoretical-conceptual framework for experimentation in post-industrial design was produced. This framework, as well the characterization of its constituent elements, should serve to descriptive and analytical purposes on experimentation practices in post-industrial design. On the other hand, an instrumental character is attributed to the framework by the proposition that strategies of post-industrial experimentation are produced from these elements and guided by a flexible mindset, which can be considered from three non-exclusive lines: experimentation for the production of meaning (meaningful), as a response to the fallacy of control; experimentation as fluid game (playful) as a response to the fallacy of efficiency; and conscientious experimentation (mindful), as a response to the determinism and the alienation of work processes.
