On the concept of community in Kierkegaard: Kierkegaard s critique of the crowd and the Church is better understood when contrasted not with the single individual, but with the community. According to the Danish philosopher, the individual finds himself in God, but it is a mistake to think that he closes himself off because of that. By taking the God-man as his model, the individual radically opens himself out to the others—in the same way that, although in a different sense, God radically opens Himself to the others by becoming man, and, consequently, demeaning Himself to reach us. The essentially Christian necessarily implies the responsibility for the neighbor, and we are only allowed to talk about community when there is such a responsible, unselfish relation to the neighbor. Therefore, the concept of community (Menighed) appears as the ideal model, different of the crowd and the Christendom, although all of them share the same basic structure. Only in the community the individual is able to fully develop his ethical-religious character, and, generally speaking, his own subjectivity.
