Resumo:
The knowlegeof the stress concentration generated by the edge of contacting bodies and the effect of roughness on the contact stresses are of great importance to the design of machine elements which have in the contact stresses their principal sources of failures. These failures usually occur due to surface fatigue (as in bearings and gears) and in applications where friction, wear and eletric contact are present. In this thesis the influence of roughness on the contact stress distribution is studied. The method of 2D photoelasticity is employed to analyse stress distributions fields generated by the contact of rough surfaces of cylindrical bodies. At first, a similitude study was carried out to define the dimensionless parameters which would be important for the problem of contact stresses. It was shown that these parameters were adequate by means of photoelastic experiments, where the dimensions of the models, their roughness and the materials were varied. Different materials were utilized, such as glass, epoxy, polyester resins and flexiglass. Experiments were carried out with contacting cylinders of metals (steel and aluminum) and birrefringent materials. The photoelastic experimental results showed that surface roughness causes great reduction on the maximum shear stress and on the maximum contact pressure. It was verified that roughness causes an increase in the width of contact of cylinders and also an increase in the contact area. The results are furnished in plots that help the design of cylindrical components by presenting the influence of roughness on the contact stresses and the limits for the application of Hertz theory. Finally, the photoelastic experiments gave an experimental validation to the theory of Lo for the contact of rough cylinders.
