Resumo:
In the middle of the 90`s, after recognizing that the current emergency services were not appropriated, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), a USA governmental institution that rules the telecommunication carriers activities, stated that every wireless carrier should be able to provide the geographic position of a subscriber making an emergency call. The subscriber position shall be determined by means of the position of the mobile station, that is, the cell phone. There are many techniques available to determine the geographic position of the mobile station. Amongst the most known techniques, we can cite the TOA (Time Of Arrival) technique, TDOA (Time Difference Of Arrival) technique and DOA (Direction Of Arrival) technique. And amongst these 3 techniques, TDOA has shown to be the most promising and most used, for it permits a simple implementation that doesn`t require modifications in the subscriber handset and for being more robust in presence of channel impairments than the other techniques. The determination of the mobile station position via the TDOA technique is accomplished in two steps. Initially, an estimation of a set of parameters called TDOA`s is obtained. Later, these parameters are used to form a system of hyperbolic equations, which solution provides the position of the mobile station. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the performance of the main algorithms available to solve a set of hyperbolic equations derived from a set of TDOA`s previously estimated. The performance of the algorithms take into account possible errors in the measured TDOA`s, that are usually raised by either natural phenomena, like the multipath effect on signal propagation, non-line of sight and others, or other causes related to the algorithm used to estimated the TDOA`s. Finally, a new algorithm is proposed and its performance is evaluated and compared to the others.
