How can education contribute to the formation of a democratic mentality? What are the current conditions of our democracy and what importance do educational practices acquire in its consolidation? These are some of the questions that guide this work, which is the result of the interest in contributing to promote democratic practices in educational institutions. The historical experiences of our societies and the 1990’s neoliberal politics have shown up that the democratic behaviors are weak and that it is necessary to strengthen them to avoid new political crisis that are detrimental to social majorities. The teenagers that graduate from middle school are called to exercise citizenship almost immediately. However, in the majority of educational institutions, political commitment is not appreciated, and also fields of participation aren’t created to allow students to find the sense of participation and democratic exercise. The democratic mentalities are not a consequence of hereditary genetic factors, but of deliberated proposals focused on achieving that goal. If we intend to achieve it, it will be necessary to go back to this path no matter how winding it seems.
