The observed changes in society from the entry of women into the labor market, led the traditional family model, as well as gender relations, to be questioned. Due to reduction in the number of children provided by the advancement of contraceptive methods and the increase in female education, women today can devote to work and succeed in several areas. Having a career has become an important value for the contemporary woman. However, despite these changes, women still tend to assume a greater share of responsibility in regard to care of children, because motherhood is still viewed as a priority in the life of a woman. The difficulties involved in reconciling motherhood and work, especially early in life of children, have led many women to abandon successful careers, resultant of dedication and investment, to return only to care for the offspring. Aiming to investigate the motivations, feelings and expectations involved in this decision, we conducted a field study with eight middle class women, with small children, who did it. Seven categories have emerged from discourse analysis of interviews, which set the primary themes of the reports of participants, involving a focus on life, the change of the goals of life after having children, highlighting the presence of the mother in the lives of children, evaluation of living with their children, support of spouse, return to work related to a social recovery, and the importance of free time. Our results point mainly to a return to less individualistic, traditional values, besides the upgrading of privacy as a means of transforming the workplace.
