This thesis examines how the stories of the characters appear in the movie O fim e o princípio (The end and the beginning, 2005), a documentary directed by Eduardo Coutinho, and the consequences as well, which have impact on otherness´ representation in contemporary Brazilian documentary. In the national movie history, Coutinho was acclaimed after his movie Cabra marcada pra morrer (Twenty Years After) was released in 1984. This project incorporated an old one made to CPC (Center of Popular Culture), interrupted in 1964 due to the military coup in Brazil (1964). Since then, valorization of memory is present in several aspects in his work and, in the movie O fim e o princípio, incorporated special features, including the prevalence of speech acts of the characters, mostly elderly, in a rural scenery. This paper proposes an analysis of the relationship between the movie O fim e o princípio with the issue of otherness´ representation contemporary Brazilian documentaries. Dialoguing with theoretical bound up with pragmatics and with cinema, this research attempts to understand the way the film is structured - as representing the exchanging language - and its possible consequences on the shaping of a memory, not only of the ordinary man, but acting forms of this backland man in extinction.
