Resumo:
This research investigates Science, Technology and Environment (STE) activities developed at an informal educational establishment in the Madureira neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro city - RJ, Brazil. This work aims to discover what kind of educational activities are developed there, the spontaneous audience s socio-cultural background, in particular related to Science, Technology and Environment topics, and what focus the accountable professionals give to the development of activities, considering the six currents of Science, Technology, Society and Environment (STSE) teaching. The empirical research was done at an operational unit of Serviço Social do Comércio (SESC), the Social Service for Trade Workers. Forms and interviews were applied to the spontaneous audience and the professionals accountable for the activities development. The research mapped the STE activities offered to the public from June to August 2019, as published at the SESC Rio Agenda, a document that publicizes the SESC activities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The theoric references which support the performed analysis insert this work into the research field of non-formal education for science and technology and the research field of science teaching through the STSE perspective. This work has contributions from authors such as Carvalho, Marandino and Cazelli on the approach of non-formal education sites as a medium for the popularization of science; Massarani and Moreira on science communication in the city of Rio de Janeiro; Bordieu on the relationship between access to cultural sites and his notion of cultural capital; and Pedretti, Nazir and Santos on the discussion of socio-scientific contents in the STSE approach. The results, submitted to quantitative analysis, indicate a highly educated audience, mostly female and black, residents from the SESC neighborhood and from a vast area around Madureira. Their reported income is between 1 to 3 times the Brazilian minimum wage, and the data points at SESC Madureira as being one of 9 the few alternatives to this sort of content in the region. Among the professionals at SESC, it was possible to observe personal trajectories marked by the presence of non-formal and social inclusion institutions and by attention to the demands of territories and their populations. The focus of the activities offered at SESC values above all else the understanding of scientific and environmental practices as associated with historic and socio-cultural aspects; the understanding of science, technology and environment as areas of knowledge that exist inside broader socio-cultural context; critical analysis and solution proposals for socioenvironmental issues which consider human action, and instigating the audience to develop an interest in pursuing scientific, technological or environmental careers, with a theoric background tied to Freirian education, multiculturalism and social inclusion.
