Resumo:
The rural community of Buriti do Meio, located in the São Francisco district of the northern Sertão region of Minas Gerais, received its recognition as a quilombo by the Palmares Cultural Foundation in 2004 has been since then broadening its access to public services and securing its rights. Buriti do Meio s history is woven by a set of lived-experiences of women whose lives are marked by the migration processes and the survival strategies as alternatives to the lack of laboropportunity in the region. I analyze in this thesis women s narratives on the possible experiences and trajectories lived through by quilombola-women in Buriti do Meio. Through an ethnographic immersion I make a dense description of the community, considering geographical location, historical formation, and political and cultural aspects. I propose that the pottery production, a traditional activity of the community, has enabled the construction of new identities of women. The craftswomen s and dancer s groups, led by the women of Buriti, have had an important role in the process of ethnic recognition and have been progressively giving exposure to the community, enhancing the value of the local culture and memory. From a feminist perspective I observe these women s movements and the new reconfigurations of the traditional sexual patterns as a consequence of the displacement from the private to the public environment: from the trees inside the productive units to the production and commercialization sheds of handicraft. These reconfigurations bring about in turn a new movement, a political movement of leadership and struggle on the part of women. They take on the protagonism of political and cultural activities of the community and remain as the individuals mainly responsible for the maintenance of the family, increasing thus their scope of action. Besides the struggle to access rights, there exists the everyday struggle to raise children and for better life-conditions. Various strategies are necessary for the maintenance of the family in the region due to the drought and the shortage of labor opportunities. I defend that the different life-experiences of Buritis women allow us to understand how women s mobility – either spatial, or symbolic – contributes to the reconfiguration of gender roles in the community. I seek to observe the spaces in which women are situated and what allows or hinders the movement in order to enter new spaces, to manage their lives and the community. The social relations and the traditional knowledge associated with the local problems, from the poverty, the coexistence with the drought and to the permanence at the community, allow me to present the protagonists of my research: the women of the Buriti do Meio s quilombo.
