In this research, we investigate the development of a socially responsible method of representation within the field of children s illustration, focusing on the Bate-Bolas, a popular masquerade festivity that takes place during Carnival in the peripheral neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro and the Baixada Fluminense. Despite its tradition and social, economic, and cultural importance-particularly regarding the intense aesthetic production involved in crafting the costumes—the festivity is often stigmatized, especially by mainstream media, due to the social inequality, violence, and criminality present in these regions. Considering the alterity of the illustrator and researcher in relation to this cultural context, the proposed method aims to provide tools to research, analyze, and expressively communicate the festivity while addressing ethical and political issues. Based on the concept of communicational sustainability (Gamba; Sarmento, 2019), we adopted the production of a documentary video about the making of the costume casacas as a field immersion strategy. The collaborative design strategies adopted throughout the process ensured a horizontal relationship between researchers and field interlocutors, contributing to a socially sustainable representation and the development of a product that serves the community. The field immersion enabled the construction of a hybrid perspective on this context, which was later graphically represented in a hybrid-genre children s book-object-combining children s literature and instructional manual language-that poetically illustrates how a Bate-Bola casaca is made and conveys the values of this culture. In producing the children s book, we also considered a new component: the dialogue with the child audience, which emerges as a third voice within the work.
