This study aims to analyze intergenerational conflicts based on the shared care exercised by grandparents for their grandchildren and its interference in the exercise of parenting. This is a qualitative research approach, whose main instrument for data engenderment consisted of semi-structured interviews with five families, included in family assessment and monitoring projects, carried out by a multidisciplinary team at Casa da Criança e do Adolescente, in Nova Friburgo/RJ. The data has been analyzed under the method of interpretation of meanings. The results showed the prevalence of single-parent families headed by women, indicating the need for support from their ancestors - here materialized by the presence of another female figure, the grandmother, who cooperates in the exercise of the role of caregiver -, which gives them more preponderant mobility for other activities, while at the same time engendering tensions regarding parental authority, educational concepts and practices and overlapping or suppression of intergenerational places. Furthermore, the need for support from grandparents arises from the intensification of activities of mothers, the precariousness of public policies and minimized paternal participation.
