This thesis aims to expand the understanding of forgiveness concepts in the works of German philosopher Hannah Arendt and French-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida, relating them to each other. Through this analysis, we will explore the possibility and impossibility of forgiveness in cases of crimes against humanity. The 20th century s history is marked by wars, genocides, and crimes against humanity - which represent the peak of systematic violence against populations. Can state leaders and individuals responsible for such crimes be forgiven? How can we analyze cases like the Holocaust and Apartheid through forgivability? This research begins by addressing the problem of forgiveness. Arendt s canon presents a trilogy on forgiveness: initially, in her doctoral thesis (Love and St. Augustine), which was first guided by Martin Heidegger and then by Karl Jaspers; later, in The Human Condition, focusing on ethical-political aspects; and finally, after Eichmann case (Eichmann in Jerusalem), conceiving situations where devastation magnitude renders forgiveness impossible. Derrida, thinking upon Arendt s work, explores forgiveness globalization post-WWII. He distinguishes forgiveness from related concepts at the 1997-1998 seminaries, continuing in 1999 (Le parjure et le pardon). Considering Apartheid in South Africa (Foi et Savoir suivi de le Siécle et le Pardon), Derrida, like Arendt, views such cases as institutional and politically unforgivable. As they are fundamental for ethics, political philosophy, and legal philosophy studies, Arendt and Derrida s works will help us analyze devastating crimes effects on human society, informing our understanding of forgiveness and responsibility.
